Making Use of IoT and Cloud Computing for Smarter Cities

    Introduction

A city in which information and communication is used to form its basic building blocks can never go wrong. Smart platforms through which a community, including administration, industries and citizens, can develop together makes a smart city.

In order to develop a smart city, we need smart mobility solutions which can primarily be provided by two emerging technologies – IoT and cloud computing. The use of better cloud management and its merging with the Internet of Things would help people perform operations through smart applications and better opportunities which would further enable people to develop their personal and entrepreneurial potential by affordable services and infrastructure.

India is roaring ahead and is on the path of establishing smart cities across the country. From the point of view of information and communication technology, the most important aspect of smart city is the implementation of IoT and cloud computing.

Examples of How IoT and Cloud Computing Can Bring a Change

In many parts of India, street lights always remain on even in the daytime. In order to conserve energy, we can install sensors in them to sense the daylight in the environment and program them to turn on only when visibility is low. This will allow the street lights to turn on in the nights thereby saving a lot of energy that is being wasted for no use.

Another example would be the installation and use of applications such as face recognition and thumb print scanners to enable citizens to access the facilities offered in the city – City Metro, Inter-city Bus transportation and ATM services, just to name a few. This will help the administration also in a drastic way. In place of using identification cards or Metro cards, we can use face recognition and thumb print scanners to identify someone and allow them to use the respective facilities. In addition to convenience, this will also increase the security and confidentiality in the city. The administration will have the information about the whereabouts of every citizen which will help decrease the crime rate in the city.

    Conclusion

There is no doubt that a city equipped with sensors would be capable of providing the best services possible to every citizen by processing all the data collected from the sensor network. In order to act smartly, these cities need to make use of artificial intelligence to understand the data and information acquired from sensors and cameras, store them in centralized clouds and process the data using data centres and servers in order to take action and resolve problems in real-time.
