Web Design Vs. Web Development: What’s the Difference?

Web Design Vs. Web Development: What’s the Difference?

    Introduction

If you have just one look at any web solution service provider websites, you are bound to come across the terms ‘Web Design’ and ‘Web Development’. In today’s world, these terms have virtually become interchangeable as most web solutions firms alternate these two terms while describing their services. However, the truth is that these two things are fundamentally different aspects of building a website, requiring two different and unique skill sets.

In a Nutshell: Web Design and Web Development

Essentially, web design refers to the aesthetical aspects of a website. It governs everything involved with the website’s visual aesthetics and usability. This may include the colour scheme, layout, fonts, images and other visual aspects of the UI/UX. So, in layman terms, web design is basically how a site looks and how users react with it. For this reason, web design is often referred to as front-end website development.

Web development, on the other hand, involves the functioning of a designed website. In the simplest of terms, web development is the coding that goes into a website. Web developers use markup and scripting languages such as HTML, PHP, JavaScript, CSS, AngularJS and others, to keep the website up and running with full functionality. Web development is thus also known as back-end website development.

A Comparison: Web Design and Web Development

In order to better understand the differences between the two, let us make a comparison of the various aspects involved in each one of them:

    Web Design

    ·         Creating website content such as text, images, audio and video

    ·         Designing the visual look and feel of websites - layout, colours, graphics, fonts etc.

    ·         Maintaining and updating website content

    ·         Overseeing the UI and UX of a website, and assisting its navigation and usability

    ·         Using graphic designing software such as Adobe Photoshop, Sketch and Illustrator to build assets

    Web Development

    ·         Implementing the functionality of a designed website by coding

    ·         Building and maintaining database and other tolls needed to operate the website

    ·         Developing and programming the website functionality

    ·         Overseeing a website’s servers, hardware and/or software, and assisting in website security

    ·         Using markup and scripting languages such as HTML, PHP, CSS and JavaScript to build assets

    Conclusion

Ultimately, web design is the art of designing the visuals and UI/UX of a website, while web development is the art of translating these designed websites into something that will actually function properly in the web world. So, do not be confused between the two and make sure to treat them as separate disciplines. Learn more about how important website design is, click here.
